The Zero Street Initiative Inc. is a nonprofit corporation registered in the State of Georgia and recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity. We operate from McDonough, Georgia, and work with congregations across the metro Atlanta area.
The problem we exist to solve is not a shortage of goodwill or of resources. It is a shortage of structure. Congregations across the country want to help their unhoused neighbours and have the means to do it, but there has never been a coordinated system that connects a willing congregation to a specific person, defines what the commitment involves, and stays accountable for the outcome. We build and operate that system.
Three connected programs, each one a stage in moving a person from the street to independence.
We make contact with individuals experiencing homelessness, build trust without pressure or obligation, and carry out a structured intake assessment to understand each person's situation, needs and goals.
We recruit congregations, match each one to a specific individual, and facilitate an introduction. The congregation provides housing and a grocery allowance for six to twelve months while we manage the case.
We work toward sustainable employment through training and second-chance employers, tracking milestones throughout and tapering support as the individual reaches self-sufficiency.
